Nanoscience is concerned with studying the physical, chemical, and biological properties of very small objects - objects with dimensions between 1 and 100 nanometers. A nanometer is one billionth (1/1,000,000,000) of a meter. A hair is 100,000 nanometers wide! Objects in the 1-100 nanometer size range have special properties, different from larger objects, and they play an important role in biology. Scientists at Indiana University are involved in a wide variety of research projects investigating the assembly and properties of objects in the nanometer size regime.
